Principle #2: However You See A Part is Fine
However you "see" a part is fine. Visual, auditory, sensory, emotional, etc.
Some people are more visual, and they will literally get images in their mind's eye. Some people get just a conversation, without actually seeing a part. Some people may just get a sensation in the body or a "knowing". Some clients may get a thought. Perhaps a certain impulse to move in some way shows up. Or there may be a blend of any of these ways or any other way, that you, and your unique subconscious shows up in the session. When first getting into parts work, some of these images or conversations may start up subtle or vague. You may second guess yourself. "Is this really right?" Just stay with it, continue exploring it, and it often becomes clearer over time.
Anything is possible. Parts can be represented as people, children, animals, movie characters, video game characters, objects, nature scenes, etc.
Also, remember that parts can change at times. For example, you may see a part represented as a raging animal that wants to destroy things in one session. Then in another session, this same part may show up as a different animal or character.
It will not always make sense at first. Give it time. Patience
Sometimes you might think, "What in tarnation is going on here?! This is crazy."Or, "How the part is answering the questions I ask it make no sense at all!"Give it some time and again, stay with it, with curiosity. Perhaps later in the session, the next day, the next week, or sometimes even longer and then it will click into place.
